Syria is now the cockpit for a Eurasian Civil War between Sunni and Shi’ite Muslims. Iran has assembled a vast mercenary army with tacit Russian and Chinese support, as a counterweight to the ISIS-centered Sunni jihad that threatens Russian and Chinese stability.

As I wrote today for PJ Media, putting US ground troops in the middle of this maelstrom is a terrible idea. The solution lies on the plane of Grand Strategy: Russia and China must fear us sufficiently to strike a deal acceptable to us in Syria. And that requires a Reaganesque defense policy.
