Russia on Friday warned at the United Nations that military options to address the threat from North Korea’s nuclear and ballistic programs were “completely unacceptable” and would have “catastrophic consequences.”
Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov told the Security Council that China’s proposals to restart talks with North Korea should be seriously examined and that sanctions alone would not work.
North Korea “is conducting itself in an inappropriate way,” Gatilov told the council. “At the same time, options of using force are completely unacceptable and could lead to catastrophic consequences.”
Russia along with China and the United States took part in six-party talks on North Korea’s denuclearization from 2003 to 2009, along with Japan, South Korea and Pyongyang.
The Security Council was meeting to try to agree on a global response to North Korea that the United States maintains must involve China ramping up pressure on its Pyongyang ally.
Gatilov said mounting rhetoric and “reckless muscle-flexing” over North Korea could lead to missteps that would have “frightening consequences.”
China’s proposal for a freeze on North Korea’s military programs in exchange for a halt to US-South Korea military drills are “ideas that merit serious attention,” Gatilov said.
The United States has rejected the Chinese proposal and insists that North Korea first take steps to show that it is ready to abandon its military programs.
Tillerson scolded the council for not fully enforcing sanctions against North Korea.
“Had this body fully enforced and stood behind resolutions enacted in the past, vigorously enforcing sanctions with full compliance, perhaps we would not have found ourselves confronted with the high level of tension we face today,” he told the 15-member council at the end of a meeting on North Korea.
“We will not negotiate our way back to the negotiating table with North Korea, we will not reward their violations of past resolutions, we will not reward their bad behavior with talks,” he added.
John Walters, just for one person whom the US does not like, the US trigger off the world war, is it worthy? Nevertheless, who are you to decide alone on such a serious international affair that may affect the world. Anyway, who has pushed the N. Korea to test on those ballistic missiles? It was the US, Hapan, S. Korea and Australia. The more miliatary drills you carry out in the Pacific region, the more stressful, the N. Korea would feel, the more N. Korea would want to get her defence ready for security.
In the end, everyone knows that it is castatrophic disaster to the world and some countries would be rooted out from this planet entirely. We know who they wil be.
The Americans must be delusinal to think their reckless muscle flexing will pressure the north Korean regime into abandoning it’s nuclear program. Holding on to their nuclear capabilities is just about the only security guarantee thats ensures the survival of their recluse state. The Americans must imagine in their calculation that they can engage in a nuclear combat with north Korean and simply incenerate them into inexistence — and get away with it too. China and Russia will not just seat idly by and allow the impulsive Trump administration drag the world into a totally catastrophic war in the Korean peninsula, which is completely avoidable if sanity prevails. After all, the Americans do not own Korea or the rest of the world to insist on whose got a right to nuclear capability when a Zionist State like Israel that invades others countries constantly remain a nuclear power.
Perhaps it’s because those dictators were put in power by the US, the UK, France or NATO in the first place. You know, like tyrannical House of Saud, or the former murderous Shah of Iran.
Russia better be very careful. Any conflict with the United States would be their worst nightmare. The United States will not allow North Korea or Iran to posses intercontinental balistic missiles. To do so means war. We will attack and the fat little Asian Mr Potato Head will end up like Muammar Gaddafi with all those people he and his psychotic fathers suppressed cutting his testicles off.
Wonderful reasoning! South Korea can now invade the North without the slightest risk that you will accuse them of aggression. They will simply be moving to another part of their own country.
we live once and die once who cares Africa needs some pressure to promote democracy
why is USA and UN security council not interven in African affairs which result in African majority poverty, can you guys please interven militarily we are tired of these dictators and freeze their offshore accounts
US need to heed the warning from Russia. Imagine the loss of face when US ships are sunk and their land forces decimated.
