A 10-year-old dyslexic Hong Kong boy who went missing in Lantau Island on Sunday was found 55km away in a 24-hour McDonald’s restaurant next to his mother’s home in Tin Shui Wai.

Ho Yau-yip was found sleeping inside the McDonald’s in Grandeur Terrace at around midnight on Wednesday, four days after he had left the Island Hostel boys’ home in Shek Pik on Easter Sunday.

It is still a mystery as to how the 10-year-old managed to travel so far on his own. According to RTHK, he would have had to walk eight to 10 minutes to the nearest Lantao Bus stop (Shek Pik). He then should have taken the bus to Tung Chung Town Center, where he can take another bus to Tin Shui Wai.

Sing Tao Daily said he took E34A bus to Tin Shui Wai.

The boy was starving and exhausted as he had not eaten for a whole day. He was examined at Tuen Mun Hospital where staff confirmed that he had no injuries, the police said.

It is also uncertain whether he had any money as well, but his mother said in earlier reports that he had none.

Ho said he was unhappy as he was often bullied by others in the hostel, Oriental Daily reported, quoting his mother who was explaining why he left the home on Lantau.

Eight months before moving into the boys’ home, Ho, who has dyslexia, was living with his mother in Tin Heng Estate. Dyslexia is a learning disability in children where they may have trouble with reading comprehension, spelling and writing.

The Hong Kong Student Aid Society runs the Island Hostel in Shek Pik, which helps boys with behavioral and emotional problems.

Alan Chan Yiu-lun, superintendent of the Island Hostel, said Ho had once expressed his wish to have more holidays.

The hostel is following up the bullying case and would provide Ho and his family with assistance, he added.
