An elderly man was released from hospital on Thursday after he was bitten by a monkey on Monday, which was among five attacks this week in housing estates in the Singapore area of Segar in Bukit Panjang.
The Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority (AVA) in the city state said the monkey situation in the neighborhood was a public safety risk, the Straits Times reported. The authority told residents that it had received about 160 reports of monkey attacks and nuisance in the area since October last year, the Times said.
The authority is stepping up efforts to remove the monkeys with the help of Animal Concerns Research and Education Society, a wildlife rescue group.
Catching the monkeys would be challenging as the primates were smart and nimble as they can climb high-rise buildings, the authority added.
Residents had been told to make their homes less attractive to monkeys by keeping food out of sight.
