The Chinese and Russian navies have sent intelligence gathering ships to follow US supercarrier the USS Carl Vinson, which is headed for waters near the Korean peninsula, according to multiple Japanese government sources cited by the Yomuri Shinbun.

The ships have been dispatched to probe US movements, as the US continues to weigh possible responses to further North Korean provocations.

The sources added that Japan’s Self-Defense Forces are also strengthening warning and surveillance activities in the area’s waters and airspace.
