China’s cabinet approved new draft rules on Wednesday to more strictly regulate the reporting of economic data “from the source,” according to a statement on the State Council’s official website.
The statement added that the draft rules would strengthen accountability for falsified data and ensure economic statistics are truthful and authoritative.
Skepticism of government statistics in China was validated to some extent last January when state media reported that Liaoning Province had provided inaccurate data over a period of four years.
