A 21-year-old Canadian-Israeli woman on a student exchange program at Chinese University of Hong Kong committed suicide in a student dormitory in Sha Tin on Monday evening.
At about 9pm, Gil, a third year psychology major who had been in the city since January, was found by one of her two roommates after hanging herself to death in a room at the International House 1, Oriental Daily reported.
Gil was pronounced dead after firemen and medical staff arrived, Apple Daily reported. Police found a suicide note in the exchange student’s room and ruled out foul play after an initial investigation.
A university spokesperson said the institution was saddened by the loss of Gil’s life and would offer assistance to her family.
The Education Bureau is considering recommendations from the Committee on Prevention of Student Suicides, which was established after a spate of student suicides last year.
There have been more than 70 student suicides in the city since 2013.
If you need help, The Samaritans runs a 24-hour multilingual suicide prevention hotline on +852 2896 0000.
at least tell us what the note said
Hi Jesse,
My daugther has been a friend with Gil. They went together to the high school CHAT. I do not believe that Gil did it because she did not.Period. I was at SHIVA, Gil’s parents are in shock. Nobody knows what to think. I understand that no motive was found. They said police has been conducting investigation. We are all shocked.
Try to contact Gil’s parents. Gil’s mother operates Le’arterie gallerie in Lesville, Toronto. I hate to think that Gil has gone.
Regards,
Margarita
