A 29-year-old Bangladeshi construction worker was paying the price for his jealousy after he received a 3.5-year jail term and six strokes of the cane for last year’s attack on his Indonesian ex-girlfriend.

A Singapore court sentenced Ahamed Suhel, who was charged with voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons, on Thursday after he was found guilty in an earlier hearing.

Suhel, who had worked in the city state for five years, was upset after 32-year-old Nuri Samad, who works as a maid, ended their three-year relationship last year, Lianhe Wanbao reported on Friday.

At 1pm on March 1 last year, he waited for Samad, who was walking home with her employer’s three-year-old child in a pram, on Gentle Road in Novena opposite a mosque.

Suhel snatched Samad’s mobile phone and tried to read her messages because he thought she had a new boyfriend. He demanded that she unlock her phone and when she was distracted, Suhel took out a 17cm-long knife and stabbed her twice in the abdomen. He also hit her in the head when she ran toward the mosque.

Samad’s colon and stomach were punctured and she also had head injuries, The Straits Times reported. The attacker was subdued by some passers-by, who called the police.

The maid now has a permanent scar and lost her job after the attack. but she hoped to be hired again, media reports said.
