An 80-year-old Hong Kong fisherman surnamed Cheung died after he dived into the sea to save his drowning wife in Tai O on Lantau Island.

At 1pm, Cheung and his 73-year-old wife surnamed Ho set off on a fishing trip in Yi O waters near Peaked Hill, on the southwestern side of Tai O. Ho fell into the sea when throwing a net, Apple Daily reported Tuesday. Cheung tried to rescue her.

The couple were rescued by a female boat owner but Cheung was later pronounced dead. Ho is now in a critical condition at the hospital.

The couple were indigenous inhabitants of the Tai O fishing village. They usually went fishing once a week for leisure. Cheung was a good swimmer but had heart disease, Sing Tao Daily reported, citing one of his daughters.
