A 26-year-old Indonesian man was arrested Sunday for extorting money from a 63-year-old woman in a telephone scam and he claimed that he was a victim of a previous scam.

The woman had lost HK$70,000 (US$9,010) in the scam on March 10 and he contacted her again for another HK$30,000, Ta Kung Pao reported.

The Indonesian, a Hong Kong identity card holder, met her in Maritime Square on Tsing Yi Island and was arrested by the police. He said he had been cheated by mainlanders over a telephone scam. He said he was told by the scammers that he could get back his own HK$30,000 if he helped them cheat others.

The police found HK$2,500 cash and remittance receipts at the man’s home in Tsuen Wan on Monday early morning, Oriental Daily reported.
