A 36-year-old French man was arrested for trying to steal diamonds worth about HK$3.12 million (US$400,000) at the AsiaWorld-Expo on Lantau Island during the first day of an annual trade show on Tuesday.

At around 10am, a 25-year-old Indian employee of an exhibitors booth at the Hong Kong International Diamond, Gem & Pearl Show reported that a jewellery box containing 15 diamonds went missing after a customer made an inquiry, Sing Pao reported.

Police conducted a wide search in the area and found the missing box. The exhibitor examined the contents and recovered the diamonds.

Using closed-circuit television footage, the police intercepted a male suspect from France inside the venue and arrested him for attempted theft, Am730 reported.

The five-day trade show, organized by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council, ends on Saturday.
