A 29-year-old French engineer and outdoor sports enthusiast lost control of his bicycle and crashed into an approaching sedan while going down an inclined road in Shek O on Sunday.

At around 8am, the Frenchman slipped into the opposite lane and hit the oncoming sedan while cycling down a section of Shek O Road, around 400 meters from the junction at Cape D’Aguilar Road, in Shek O, the Headline Daily reported. He was wearing a bike helmet.

The impact threw the French cyclist into the air, he hit the ground and lay unconscious due to severe head injuries. He was later pronounced dead at hospital.

The French engineer had worked in Hong Kong for some time, but his family remained in France. Four colleagues rushed to the hospital and learned details of the accident from the police at the hospital.

Oriental Daily said a police preliminary investigation suggested that the accident was likely the result of the slippery road conditions after the rain.
