Chinese netizens took to social media to bemoan the recent blocking of Pinterest, an image sharing platform popular among people in creative industries. While other image sharing sites, such as Instagram, Tumblr and Snapchat have long been blocked in China, Pinterest was spared the treatment, perhaps due to its focus on fashion and design content, largely devoid of political commentary. Users are left wondering why now, and whether the unannounced ban, which coincided with the Annual National People’s Congress session, will be permanent.
