The US-China Business Council profiled the rise of China’s commercial drone industry this month, finding that, despite regulatory obstacles, China will maintain a dominant position in the industry for the foreseeable future. Local governments have been encouraging use of the technology in the agriculture sector, and drones are also being used extensively in China’s booming filmmaking sector. In 2015, Intel invested US$60 million in Chinese drone manufacturer Yuneec, in a collaboration to work on 3D photography capabilities. China boasts five of the world’s top eleven venture capital-funded drone manufacturers. Regulations prohibiting drone use in highly populated areas have hampered ecommerce firms’ experimentations for use in delivery, but the diversity of domestic industries offering potential applications of the devices will fuel growth for some time.
