Hong Kong Observatory issued a cold weather warning Thursday afternoon, with temperatures in urban areas forecast to fall to around 12 degrees on Friday.
An intense northeast monsoon will bring cold and cloudy weather to south China coastal areas in the next couple of days. The temperature over the past three days was above 20 degrees.
The observatory called on people to make visits to elderly people living alone. While the temperatures in sub-tropical Hong Kong are relatively warm compared with cities such as Beijing, Seoul or Tokyo, lack of insulation and poor building design make even mild winters an uncomfortable experience.
