The celebrated Serbian artist Endre Penovac’s paintings of roosters seem singularly apt for this Lunar New Year. Not only do they capture the spirit of the rooster, this year’s zodiac animal, but they mirror some of the aspects and technique of eastern ink masters.

Penovac’s approach is to commit as few lines and tones to paper as possible: just enough to arrive at a likeness of his subject in form and substance. His aim is to use ink to create a balance between darkness and light, density and transparency, and each brushstroke is imbued with resonance and character.
