Former governor of Hong Kong Chris Patten visited the city to attend a lunch event at the Foreign Correspondents’ Club, where he gave a passionate and at times humorous defense of the liberal economic order, globalization and freedom of speech.
The lifelong Conservative also rounded on the “antics” of local lawmakers over the issue of making an oath of allegiance to China. Independence for Hong Kong was not a realistic prospect and it would be a tragic mistake to combine that issue with the broader struggle for full democracy, he said.
