The final chapter of ‘Descendants of the Sun’ will come to a close on Thursday, and fans of the Korean drama are both happy and sad.
Despite KBS confirming that there won’t be another season, optimistic fans are hoping that there will be one. “I will miss Song Joong-ki and Song Hye-kyo. I really wish they are back for the next season,” said Joanna Mae Caputolan, a young fan from Philippines.
This is only the beginning of a happy ending for ‘Descendants of the Sun.’ The popular K-drama has already left behind a strong legacy.
Like the Harry Potter books, the fans believe that the show will inspire movies and cosplay events.
The drama has already inspired several forums, fan art and an astonishing range of merchandise.
Mobile phone cases inspired by ‘Descendants of the Sun’ is all the rage among the smartphone users in Asia. Nguyen Le Thanh Nhan from Vietnam is quite fond of hers.
“I am a huge fan of ‘Descendants of the Sun.’ Apart from the cute ‘DOTS’ mobile case, I also have a military-themed stuffed bear,” she said.
Bedspreads and pillowcases featuring the ‘Song-Song’ couple are popular among teenagers in Philippines, South Korea, China, Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, and Japan.
The blockbuster show has also inspired a new line of fashion accessories. The sunglass worn by the charismatic captain Yoo Shi Jin and Dr Kang Mo Yeon’s sneakers and canvas bags are selling like hot cakes on Qoo10 and e-bay. Even small stores such as Mhikorean Shop are selling homespun merchandise on Facebook.
Fans outside South Korea have expressed interest to visit the fictional city of Urk. Similar to the Harry Potter tours in London, the city of Taebaek in Gangwon Province has plans to rebuild the film set of Descendants of the Sun and create a special tourism package.
As part of this initiative, the drama’s protagonist Song Joong-ki was recently appointed the honorary tourism ambassador of South Korea.
