Bloomberg notes that Americans’ spending on eating out has just overtaken spending on groceries:

That probably has a lot to do with the fact that more Americans live alone. The family dinner has been replaced by a greaseburger in the virtual company of Facebook friends, who do not share meals, but share Instagram pictures of their meals.

In 1960, single-person households comprised just over 10% of the total. Now they are close to 30%. The proportion of two-person households rose slightly, from 28% to 34%. Households with three or more members, meanwhile fell to 40% from 60% of the total.
