Hong Kong police seized 354 kilograms of cocaine valued at HK$380 million (US$48 million) on Tuesday night during a raid of a house in Sheung Shui in the New Territories, making it the largest bust in the past three years.
Acting on a tip-off after a six-month investigation, officers from the New Territories North regional crime squad gathered in Kwu Tung in Sheung Shui and intercepted a rented van along Kam Tsin South Road, according to a press briefing from the Hong Kong Police Force.
A total of 140 kilograms of cocaine was found inside the car. Officers then took three suspects to a house and found another 214 kilograms of cocaine and two kilograms of crack cocaine. The estimated market value of the drugs was about HK$380 million.
Officers found drug manufacturing paraphernalia, including an industrial dryer, a sealer, an electronic scale and soda powder. The three men aged 33, 41 and 42 in the vehicle were arrested and charged with drug trafficking and manufacturing, the Oriental Daily reported.
Police believe they busted a drug syndicate that had been operating for six months. Officers are still investigating the relationship between the trio, where they sourced the drugs from and whether anyone else was involved. It is understood that one of the suspects is a member of a local triad organization. All three were being detained for questioning.
