A Filipino-American basketball player who was arrested on September 19 for allegedly being in the Philippines illegally was later released.
Troy Rike, 22, who plays for the National University basketball team, was served a warrant of arrest by the Bureau of Immigration, who claimed that he was studying in the country illegally because he did not have the proper visa, CNN Philippines reported.
The basketball player was arrested immediately following a game against the De La Salle Green Archers at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
Rike was detained for 24 hours and was released only after he was able to provide documents to prove his dual citizenship, which give him the right to study in the Philippines.
“I don’t think they do this in general just rounding up Americans, saying show me your papers so I do feel I was singled out and that’s not okay in my opinion,” Rike said.
According to BI spokesperson Dana Sandoval, Rike’s arrest followed normal procedure. She said that the BI act on any report or information that they receive from the public.
“If we receive information about a possible immigration violation, we act on it,” Sandoval said.
Sandoval also admitted that there was no case pending against Rike.

He has a Filipino passport so being a citizen you don’t need a visa. He is even part of the 23 for 23 Gilas program which means he acquires his Philippine passport before he turnes 16 years old.. Filipinos dont need a visa to study in the Philippines. It’s an obvious shakedown from one of the most corrupt agency in the Philippines.

For me he should not be arrested . The proper action must be to demmand his visa to be presented. And if no authentic visa that ‘s the time issuance of warrant of arrest.
