The Philippine government says 196 Filipino workers have died in Kuwait since 2016. The Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) said 155 Filipinos died for medical reasons, 22 committed suicide, 14 deaths were due to accidents and five for unknown reasons, GMA News reported.
OWWA added that last year, 1,549 cases of domestic workers being maltreated by their employers were reported. There were 65 rape cases reported and 243 sexual-harassment cases.
This month, the Philippine government imposed a total ban on deployment of Filipino workers to Kuwait because of the growing number of abuse cases and deaths in the country.
President Rodrigo Duterte ordered the repatriation of Filipinos from Kuwait after a domestic worker’s body was found in a freezer.
The Kuwaiti government meanwhile has extended its amnesty program by two months to give Filipinos working in the country illegally more time to return home.
The Philippine Embassy in Kuwait said 1,796 people had been repatriated so far and it expects 2,000 more to be sent home in the next few days, Manila Bulletin reported.
