An elderly Hong Kong woman and her 58-year-old male domestic worker, whom she had employed for more than a decade, were killed in a traffic accident in To Kwa Wan on Thursday morning.
A tourist coach with mainland visitors on board failed to stop, hit the pair as they were crossing Ma Tau Kok Road at Pak Tai Street around 10am, RTHK reported. They were stuck beneath the coach and dragged for 10 meters.
The Filipino had been a domestic worker for the 85-year-old woman, who had difficulty in walking, for more than a decade, the Hong Kong victim’s son-in-law said. The pair had a good relationship and were on their way to breakfast.
The elderly woman died instantly and the Filipino was certified dead at Kwong Wah Hospital. The victims had followed the traffic signals when they were crossing the road, Apple Daily reported.
Police arrested the 55-year-old coach driver on suspicion of dangerous driving causing death and he passed a breath alcohol test. Around 31 people, mostly mainland tourists, on the coach were uninjured.
Citing an initial investigation, officers said that after the coach picked up passengers near Jubilant Place Shopping Arcade, it clipped the front of a route 106 bus traveling in the same direction in an adjacent lane and then hit a traffic light pole, i-Cable TV reported. It failed to stop and struck the pair on the crossing.
