Twenty-two foreigners were arrested on suspicion of working without permits on Friday in a joint operation of Hong Kong’s police and the labor and immigration departments.
Fifteen mainland Chinese and seven other Asians, aged between 30 and 59, were detained in some shops and on streets in Wong Tai Sin, Kwung Tong, Tsung Kwan O, Sau Mau Ping and Ngau Tau Kok, Apple Daily reported.
Four locals were also arrested on suspicion of abetting others to breach condition of stay and forgery but were released on bail pending the police investigation.
The seven arrested Asians, aged between 29 and 46, included three women – two Indonesian and one Vietnamese – and four Pakistani and Bangladeshi men, Oriental Daily reported, citing police sources. One of the Indonesian women was a former domestic worker suspected of overstaying as a dishwasher in a restaurant after her visa expired.
Five of those arrested had claimed asylum. Hong Kong forbids them to work while their applications are being processed.
