The recent massive bombings on Ukrainian territory and advances by the Russian army are harbingers of the end game that will befall Ukraine unless that country can find a way out. One solution is to make Ukraine a flexible actor, meaning to insulate Zelensky. The best way to do that is a coalition government to carry the burden of negotiations with Russia.

Today we keep hearing from Zelensky and his cohorts that they can win the war without America, that they won’t yield even one meter of Ukrainian territory to the hated Russians, that they can buy American military equipment “on rental” or buy American hardware by using Germany as a front.

Does the Ukrainian leadership actually believes what they are saying?

My guess is they don’t believe any of it but are trying to reassure their people. But it is hard to be reassuring when missiles and drones are exploding everywhere and you are sleeping in a shelter or a cold basement.

Negotiations blunder

The great blunder came in on or about March 30, 2022. That is when Boris Johnson allegedly convinced Zelensky to back out of the peace deal agreed to by the parties in Istanbul. My own reading is that Johnson gave a sort of legitimacy to a Zelensky decision to walk away from a deal with Russia, fearing that his army would topple his presidency and maybe kill him.

Prior to that, as former Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett reported, Zelensky was afraid the Russians would kill him, and Bennett secured a pledge from Vladimir Putin not to do so. But no such pledge was possible if the threat was from ultras in the Ukrainian army.

Since then, Zelensky has taken a fully irredentist position on any settlement with Russia, demanding the Russian army leave Ukraine and that Putin be punished for war crimes. By his total inflexibility Zelensky has foreclosed successful mediation by the United States.

To cover his tracks, Zelensky has demanded a 60 day cease fire, something the Russians would never accept, but Trump tried to sell it to Moscow, to no effect. The idea was again floated as recently as July 3rd when Putin and Trump talked for more than an hour by telephone.

The problem for Ukraine, not just Zelensky, is that Ukraine is running out of weapons and soldiers and starting to lose territory at an alarming rate. As supply roads and ammunition dumps, along with command centers and factories, are destroyed, the situation worsens on a daily basis.

The Russians have a number of aces in their hands. First, they have a large army with a significant reserve that they have not committed to the war yet. That compares with Ukraine’s serious problems not only in recruiting new soldiers, but also in keeping them, as desertion rates have grown at an alarming pace.

Russia also is bringing in more North Koreans, something that appears to strengthen North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un, who recently held a tearful public funeral for his soldiers killed in the Ukraine war (there were only five coffins) and a big celebratory concert extolling the virtue of sacrificing your life for the Fatherland.

Ammunition problems

Russian war production is also reportedly at an all time high while Ukraine’s suppliers are floundering badly. The recent “show cause” letter the army sent to the US defense company General Dynamics, which partnered with a Turkish company, Repkon, threatened to cancel the project tasked with building a 155mm artillery production plant in Mesquite, Texas.

The US-government-owned new factory (the first of three) was supposed to buck up US 155mm shell production enough to comfortably supply Ukraine. Now the US Army is on the verge of firing GD because the facility is not on schedule and there are serious shortfalls in the machinery for the plant, some of which comes from Turkey.

Around the same time the Army released its “show cause” letter to GD, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced that certain supplies, some of them missiles and other high tech equipment, and 155mm shells, would not be delivered to Ukraine – including some supplies already shipped to Poland.

The Trump administration has been building up US capabilities in the Middle East. The Hegseth cancellation, based on badly depleted US weapons’ stocks, is part of a growing concern that replenishing important systems, including Patriot air defense missiles, has not worked out as expected. The US faces manufacturing delays, supply chain problems, and labor shortages.

The best that can be said is that the United States is far away from a defense industrial base that can produce sufficient war fighting equipment for extended conflict periods. Various think tanks and numerous simulations have always said the US would run out of smart weapons in a major conflict in only a few weeks. When you add that the US also cannot keep up with straightforward traditional ammunition production, the problem is seriously compounded.

This leaves Ukraine in a cascading mess. Something has to give, and soon, for Ukraine to survive as an independent state. NATO is not going to intervene because the risk outweighs the benefit, as Europe would become a war zone. What is the answer?

Steps toward a positive outcome

The first step is to give Trump tools he can use to barter with Russia. Zelensky has done the opposite up till now – but that game, if it continues, is suicidal.

The best place to begin is to signal a willingness to accept the Istanbul agreement reached in 2022. The Russians will try to say that the Istanbul agreement is now water under the dam, but there is a chance Putin would accept it as a starting point. He has said in many speeches that the Istanbul agreement would have ended the war and Russia would have accepted it.

Obviously there are Russian demands not accounted for at Istanbul that must be taken account of by the parties. The important point is that by accepting Istanbul as a starting point, US President Donald Trump would have something “real” to start a real diplomatic process, not just a plethora of “plans” none of which is going anywhere until the starting positions change.

The second point is the US has real leverage that includes access to markets for Russia, technology sharing, commercialization and investment and rebuilding in Ukraine.

Putin says he is committed to rebuilding the areas in Donetsk, Zaphorize, Kherson and Crimea that have been destroyed by the fighting. But Russia does not have either the resources or the money to do much on its own. US assistance is needed. The Russians are seeking a high level deal with the United States.

The third point is the nature of Ukraine’s government, which rules by decree as the Zelensky government has frozen elections and jailed, restricted or exiled opposition politicians. While it is important for Zelensky to end martial law and permit elections, an immediate step is to form a coalition government to negotiate with Russia.

A coalition government spreads responsibility for any deal to all the pertinent political players, making it easier for them to make concessions. Another key benefit is that it helps protect Zelensky from accusations of a sellout.

Ukraine is at an inflection point. Either it can continue and lose the war, perhaps leading to regime change and a political crisis, or it can take steps to put realistic proposals on the table, something that may require a coalition to achieve.

  1. I don’t know about Ukraine, but in Russia there is a purification and consolidation of society. There is no sign of weakening. It is clear to everyone that Russia will not survive with such corruption and such a worldview. Patriotic, smart and honest people must be brought to power. By the way, if the West had not imposed a war with Ukraine on Russia, it would have perished faster. Another 5-10 years and high-tech production would have disappeared in Russia. Ukraine and the West turned out to be too greedy and hasty, or the global economic crisis really does not give time for reflection. The fact that Russia expected to defeat Ukraine in three days is a lie. After the collapse of the USSR, Ukraine got the most combat-ready part of the weapons and many officers. The Americans gave the Russians only nuclear weapons, as more reliable and reasonable. But nuclear weapons have not been used yet, so Ukraine’s chances were very high. Since Ukraine has screwed up its chances, it means that such is the government and such is the people. Half the world openly helps them, but they still can’t win.

    1. Purification? With a TFR of 1.2 and increasing numbers of Central Asian Muslims? in the cities? Russland ist kaput.
So Ukr got the best gear? But that was in the 1990’s. Putin had 20yrs to modernise and improve the Army/Navy, as Russia was flush with gelt.
Once again the Russians proved themselves to be drunk, brutal, incompetents.
There is a reason why Russ has a problem producing a civil, civilised country. Look at your leaders Ivan the Formidable and Peter the Great. Both ended up having their sons murdered. A dark stain on the soul of the nation.
NATO only half helps Ukr, they don’t want to see Putin win, but are terrified of him losing and a Russian collapse. Brusilov Offensive.

  2. I told everyone here, that ukraine and the west was going to lose. I told em. Now everyone is on the ukraine loser train. So who’s the winner? Ghina.

    1. Certainly not Russia. But did you read the FSB report saying that Ghina was the enemy?
Oh and where’s Winnie? He hasn’t been seen in 2 months and is not going to Brics in Brasil. Palace coup or is he at a health spar losing some weight>

  3. Well look at that. The US and by extension the EU can’t make weapons and artillery shells. Want to know why? For the last few decades, Ghina was Ray Ping all that once great Western manufacturing capabilities and bringing it to the land of peace and tranquillity.

    1. Ghina? The only ray ping was done by the Japanese in Nanking. When Mao ran away.
Sadly most LBFM’s prefer something larger without monolids.

  4. The Western gang cannot stomach a negotiated settlement with the Russians. That’s their problem. Russia will continue the attrition until Ukraine collapses, and this is the only logical conclusion. The West will lose whatever credibility they have left when the collapse happens. China will be more than happy with the result. The new world order will rise from the shredding of NATO’s reputation. I will say “Bravo”!

    1. Ghina hit the jackpot and it didn’t even ask for it. The Moore-ons in the west sold out their population and prosperity for more votes which is ironic to say the least. But at lest chump is making everyone feel good.

      1. Are you one of those moore-ons?
Nah, China is like Japan in the 80’s, feet of clay (and even worse drivers)

  5. Everything “Ukraine” had going for it was thanks to the USSR. After 1991, not even the Americans trusted “Ukraine” with nuclear weapons. After 1991, Ukrainians had an opportunity to stop living on victimhood and write a new chapter in their history. Things were going well until 2014 when the CIA did some dirtywork regime change. Ever since, “Ukraine” has been committing suicide. Over 14,000 people have died due to NATO and Ukrainian shelling of Donbas. Western media ignored those crimes. NATO and Ukrainians shot down MH17 and blamed Russia. After 2022, Russia had enough and “Ukraine” is now -20 million down and -20% territory down. And the West calls this “winning”. The West is braindead their only “strategy” is copy pasting Afghanistan 1980 in 2025. How foolish.

    1. OK so being brought up on the myth of the pedoprofit makes a person more susceptible. But this takes the biscuit.
The Soviet Union held back every country it placed it’s jackboot on, from Russ to Ukr and finally the Warsaw Pact countries. Ask any citizen of Pl, CzS, Hu, Ro, Yugo, etc if they think being part of the Comecon economic zone was beneficial, and 90% will laugh in your face. The 10% are old or losers.
MH17 was shot down by aliens, didn’t you know that ?
Many have fled Ukr, but many fought. Many Russian fled, and Putin has resorted to criminals and NKoreans. A country with 4x the population and 10x the resources is being drained of people.
But let’s not mention how Russia has lost influence in ME, Caucaus and Central Asia.

  6. The politicians that came to power after the Maidan Revolution have gambled and lost. They allowed their thoughts and actions to be coloured by historical grievances, instead of being firmly anchored in the present, cognisant of hazard. They have taken successfully Ukraine from tranquillity to national disaster. They can maintain control of the discourse while the war rages, but if they lose, when peace returns, they will have some explaining to do. Ukraine won’t disappear, it will just be reduced a bit. A public commission of inquiry is sure to follow.

    1. Ukraine was one of the most corrupt countries in the world pre-2014. Maidan (I’ve been there) was a popular uprising (sure CIA were there, but so were FSB on the other side) against a leader who promised the EU, but then got a much better offer from Moskau. I would also have taken the latter offer, rather than trust the EU.
But what you are missing is this. For 300yrs the Russ & Ukr have fought and suffered together. Think English & Irish in the British Army.
Thanks to Putin’s ‘SMO’ those bonds of blood are now shattered. The Ukr’s hate their close Slavic brother. That is the tragedy. Was someone too scared to tell Putin the Ukr’s would not welcome the Russ with open arms?

      1. “For 300yrs the Russ & Ukr have fought and suffered together”

Absolutely not true. Ukraine as a country was put together by Joseph Stalin. Until then, the western lands of the Stalin’s Ukraine had been under the Polish rule, while the Easter lands (the left bank of Dnipro) had been mostly empty space because it could not be defended and because the Crimean Tatars and Ottomans harvested this land for slaves (think janissaries). The West and East have no cultural, historical or psychological commonality. The West had been populated by an ethnicity of peasants who eventually rebelled against their oppressors and slaughtered many Poles — they are also the ones who embraced European racism. The East had been populated by mobile, militant free-men (called Cossacks) of no particular ethnicity (including Jewish, see Wiki Jewish_Cossacks), composed of men (former peasants) who left their lands (including England, there are Smiths in East Ukraine) for whatever reasons in search of freedom and better life. The Cossacks spread throughout Central Asia, Siberia and all the way to Alaska — there are many Cossack last names in Alaska. It is actually easy to figure out what side the East is on (if not for the deafening stream of USAID propaganda) — just look up which way the vast majority of Cossack regiments went in the war with Charles XII of Sweden. If Cossacks hated and still hate anyone, it is Europe with its feudal oppression of peasants (what they ran away from to be free), oppressive Catholicism, hypocrisy, pretentiousness, hatred, racism, envy etc. And that’s perhaps why Europa can’t let go of this war in Ukraine…

        1. LOL. In summary, you said that Eastern Europe, Siberia, and Alaska were so empty that the “freedom-loving” Europeans, or Cossacks as you called them, simply had to take over the land. So where were the Eskimos, Sakha (Yakuts), Buryats, Komi, Khakas, Nenets, Chukchi, and Koryaks in the eastern Urals, the Komi-Permyaks, Mari, Mansi, Udmurts, Bashkirs, and Tatars in the southwestern Urals, and the Ainu, Oroks, and Nivkhs on Sakhalin?

Isn’t it very racist of you to consider these indigenous peoples “nothing” or “subhuman”? Just a short excerpt from the Wiki “Russian Conquest of Siberia”:
“The Russian conquest of Siberia began in July 1581 when some 540 Cossacks under Yermak Timofeyevich invaded the territory of the Voguls…”
So, the Cossacks! You can find Russian genocides in Siberia on the internet if you just search.

Your fairy tale about the Cossacks as a “freedom-loving people” is not only absurd, but also very much like Russian propaganda.
In short: The Cossacks were the worst bloodthirsty, racist mercenaries.

        2. You’re missing the Hapsburg rule, in which the Ukrainians were taught in their own language after 1848. When the Poles rebelled, the Ukr peasants remained loyal to Vienna.
Cossacks hating feudalism? When was serfdom abolished in ‘Europe’ compared to Russia?
Come on Ivan, your history is flawed.
The argument flows back and forth, but undeniable is every Ukr town should raise a statue of Putin, he has defined Ukr nationalism, whether E or W Ukr, ie NOT Russian.

      2. You admit that you were there
What were you doing? Same as your grandfather killing children

        1. I’m not that old… I visited. But maybe you were in China and like your Grandfather involved in the 60m deaths of the cultural revolution?

    2. This phrase “They have taken successfully Ukraine from tranquillity to national disaster.”Russia was on the path to prosperity, but within three years, the tsar-maniac Vampire Poo-tin transformed Russia into a nation living at China’s mercy, and Russia’s war economy is making everything scarce. For example:
      – Reuters: “Potato price surge fuels inflation pain for Russia’s poorest.”
      – agfundernews.com: Russia is facing a potential wheat shortage in the coming year due to a combination of factors including reduced harvests and ongoing export restrictions. Forecasts indicate a significant decline in wheat production for the 2025 harvest, with estimates ranging from an 11% to 27% decrease.

      1. So your statement applies more to Russia under Vampire Poo-tin than to Ukraine under Zelensky. It’s certain that the EU will help rebuild Ukraine after the war. I highly doubt China will rebuild Russia. An inevitable debt trap. LOL.

      2. Everyone is at China’s mercy. The only exception are the Jews and the billionaires that lord over the US population.

        1. Sigh! Expired Conserve, time to write and spell English in a good and workmanlike manner. It’s insulting to write, “Everyone is at China’s mercy.”, more polite and courteous “Everyone is with China’s love.” LOL.
