A man in South Africa suffered injuries to his arm when a lioness bit him while he tried to stroke her through the wire in her enclosure.

Pieter Nortje, 55, was visiting the Tikwe River Lodge in Virginia, Free State, with his wife Ilze to celebrate their 10th wedding anniversary, News24 reported. A video of Nortje sticking his arm in the enclosure surfaced online and captured the incident.

The 55-year-old can be heard saying “if you bite me, I’m going to bite you back” as he strokes one lion. A lioness then approaches and he says “let daddy stroke you.” Things then took a predictable turn for the worst when the lioness bit into his right arm and started pulling him towards the enclosure.

A woman can be heard screaming off camera. Nortje was taken to Katleho Hospital in Virginia and was later transferred to the Pelonomi Hospital in Bloemfontein. He was said to be in serious condition and suffering from septic shock.
