The initial planned sales volume for the Huawei smart TVs is approximately 10 million units per year. Handout.

Huawei may release a TV-like product in April, sina.com reported, citing unnamed sources.

The report said Huawei has signed letter of intent with TV panel producers with an initial planned sales volume of 10 million units a year, however it has yet to start production.

BOE Technology Group will be the vendor to provide 55-inch TV panels and Shenzhen Huaxing Photoelectric Technology will be the supplier for the 65-inch panels, it said. The assembler will be High record (Suzhou) Electronics.

At a company event on March 14, Yu Chengdong, Huawei’s chief executive for consumer businesses, said the company will not produce TVs to compete with traditional home appliance companies.

Although Huawei will name the TV-like product “a smart terminal with TV functions,” consumers will consider it as a smart TV, said a business insider.

Meanwhile, a traditional TV maker expressed concern about Huawei entering the TV market, fearing that market share will be heavily impacted.

  1. It is a digital television that is, essentially, an Internet-connected, storage-aware computer specialized for entertainment. Smart TVs are available as stand-alone products but regular televisions can also be made “smart” through set-top boxes that enable advanced functions.
