A passenger was arrested after being caught with 400 bullets in his luggage at the Juanda International Airport in Surabaya, East Java, on Saturday. A spokesperson for East Java Police Senior Commissioner Frans Barung said the passenger, only identified as SP, was a 36-year-old resident of Surabaya, The Jakarta Post reported.

SP landed at the airport on February 23 at about 11 pm, said Barung. Airport staff became suspicious of his luggage when it went through the X-Ray scanner. After a manual search, packages wrapped in tape were found concealed in piles of clothing. SP and his family reportedly took flight CI-751 from Taiwan and changed planes in Singapore before arriving in Surabaya.

Customs found 400 bullets for different firearms, as well as various firearm parts, in the packages. SP and his three family members claimed they were returning from a holiday in Oregon, the US, and they bought the bullets there. He also produced his Indonesian Shooting and Hunting Association membership card when authorities took him in for questioning.

Barung said the bullets and firearm parts were being brought into the country illegally and added that the investigation was ongoing. In the Indonesian legal system, gun permits are issued to citizens in selected professions only, including doctors, public officials, military soldiers and police officers.
