Chinese phone maker Huawei announced it has released its self developed phone chip, the advanced Kirin 980, the world’s first mobile chip using TSMC’s 7nm process, The Paper reported.
Huawei representative Ai Wei said the company has invested more than US$300 million in the R&D of the chip, which was launched in Shanghai.
For mobile phone chips, advanced manufacturing processes are the foundation for performance and power efficiency. At present, the industry generally adopts the 10nm process, while Apple as well as Qualcomm’s next-generation chip are also expected to adopt the 7 nm process.
So far, TSMC, known as the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, the world’s largest dedicated independent semiconductor foundry, is the only company in the world that supports mass production of the 7nm process.
Huawei’s flagship mobile phone Mate20 series to be released next month will be equipped with this chip.

I won’t worry too much about it. Money talks. Brands of all countries went through the cycle: SK, Taiwan, Japanese, even American, eg Mustang was a knockoff of Ferrari, driving on right side with steering wheel on left was made to protect Europeans dominating the American market, same thing as 220v vs 120v so other countries won’t work here.
白恆禮 iPhone A Chips are also made by TSMC. Is it Apple tech or TSMC? iPhones are assembled by Foxconn in China. Is iPhone an Apple tech, Foxconn tech, or Chinese tech? U have no idea how things are made or put together.
It’s not their technology, it’s TSMC from Taiwan
WuKong Sun , it’s TSMC technology that Huawei is riding on…
You have the technology, but you must also have the trust of the market .
BTW I was referring to Huawei not TSMC for making the breakthrough.
Robert Li Wise guy, 7nm isn’t even out yet. 5nm is on drawing board approaching quantum limits that need to be solved. There are no 3nm working chips. Try not topping yourself and look stupid.
Just for your info., TSMC is working on a new plant in Tainan Taiwan to develop 3nm technology. So, 7nm is yesterday’s news already.
Damn! I thought it would take >5 yrs. Told U Amerimorons it will only stoke the fire in China chip industry. Kiss Qcom and USA semiconductors good bye. Intel could be next….
