Russian military police posts are being set up in Syria along the demilitarized zone of the Golan Heights facing Israel, Russian state news agency Interfax reported Tuesday.
It is only the latest instance of Russia acting as a referee in the Syrian civil war.
The area has for decades been under the supervision of the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force, or UNDOF. The force, created in 1974, is mandated to help maintain a ceasefire between Israeli and Syrian forces and supervise disengagement.
But over the course of Syria’s seven-year civil war, the ceasefire zone has been a repeated flashpoint — between the Syrian military and armed opposition groups, as well as the Syrian and Israeli armed forces.
The UN Security Council in June 2017 passed a resolution calling on all groups to vacate UNDOF positions and to return peacekeepers’ vehicles, weapons and other equipment that had been looted.
Moscow, an ally to rivals Tel Aviv and Damascus, has used its influence to play arbiter.
Lieutenant-General Sergei Kuralenko, the deputy commander of Russian forces in Syria, said Tuesday that Russian military police were already deployed along the Golan Heights.
“At the moment four Russian military police posts are in place. Another two will be deployed in the near future. There will be six of them all in all. Eventually we may increase the total number to eight, if need be,” he told the Russian news agency TASS.
Kuralenko stressed the Russian posts sit outside the sensitive demilitarized zone and that the mission of his men is to assist UNDOF in renewing patrols.
According to TASS, Syrian government forces will take over the Russian posts “as soon as order has been restored.”
It’s good to have Russia as an interface on the Golan Heights.
No one else is up to the job. Syria must be rebilt (China), and
Israel must be squelched.

Micaiah the Jewish Prophet, had gonads down to his ankles figuratively speaking, speaking to the kings of Israel and Judea holding a Summit Meeting to discuss going to War with Syria over the Golan Heights.
All 400 of 401 Prophets in Israel were unanimous telling the kings to go to war and God was with them to deliver victory.
Micaiah, the only dissenter, said to the other 400 Prophets and to Israeli king Ahab’s face,
"Therefore, listen to the word of the Lord. I saw the Lord seated on His throne, and all the host of heaven were standing by Him on His right and on His left.
And the Lord said, ‘Who will entice Ahab so that he will go up and fall in Ramoth-Gilead?’ One said in this manner and another one said in that manner.
And a certain spirit came forth and stood before the Lord and said, ‘I will entice him,’ and the Lord said to him ‘How?’
And he said, ‘I will go forth, and I will be a lying spirit in the mouth of all his prophets.’
And He said, ‘You will entice and you will prevail. Go forth and do so.’
And now, behold the Lord has placed a lying spirit in the mouth of all these prophets of yours, whereas the Lord spoke evil concerning you."
Naturally, one of the other Prophets gave Micaiah a shot to the head.
The kings ignored him and went to War on the advice of the 400. Before the king of Israel left to fight, it’s recorded, ‘So said the king, "Place this one in prison, and feed him a scant amount of bread and a scant amount of water until I come back in peace. "
And Micaiah said: "If you will return in peace, the Lord did not speak to me." And he said, "All the nations listen."
This one Day, one Scene in his Life is the only mention of Micaiah in the whole Bible.
The king divested of his Royal robes and Chariot, entering the battle incognito and was killed.
It is the 1st Biblical reference to the idea/concept of "Speaking Truth to Power."
Looking to that part of the World Today, History is still repeating itself these 2900 years later.
