Germany’s interior minister has offered to resign over Chancellor Angela Merkel’s “ineffective” European Union deal to tackle migration, according to reports.
Horst Seehofer, leader of the CSU, a key party in Merkel’s coalition, has become increasingly hostile to her position on immigration.
Last week he threatened to turn back asylum seekers at Germany’s borders unless Merkel reached an acceptable deal with other EU countries, a move that has raised questions about the chancellor’s political future.
Merkel’s Christian Democratic Union (CDU) passed a resolution on Sunday night supporting her position on migration. However, sources within the CDU’s Bavarian sister party, the CSU, suggested that Seehofer had offered to resign both as leader of the CSU and as interior minister.
The sources said that in Sunday’s private party meeting, Seehofer said he had a “conversation with no effect” with Merkel when they held talks on Saturday about the EU migration deal, AFP news agency reported. He added that he wanted to quit because he enjoyed “no support.” However, sources said senior party officials were trying to convince him to stay in his post.
