A Filipino domestic worker was sentenced to four months in jail after she was found to have unlawfully worked at a second job in Hong Kong for 15 years.
Besides her regular job as a maid, the woman, identified only as MJ, 42, also worked as a cashier at a spa that was owned by her employer in Hung Hom, Kowloon. In Hong Kong, it is illegal for domestic workers to be employed in other jobs, sunwebhk.com reported.
MJ worked at the spa illegally for 15 years before she was caught by the Immigration Department. Four Thai masseuses were also caught and were deported; however, MJ was sentenced to four months in Lo Wu Correctional Institution.
According to a friend of MJ, she said a former worker at the spa who had been fired had threatened to complain to the authorities about the illegal workers there.
The friend said she warned MJ to stop working at the spa as it was risky and she was not even being paid anything extra on top of her maid’s salary. She also warned MJ that according to her contract, she was only allowed to work at her employer’s home.
