A 36-year-old Bangladeshi man was jailed for eight months by a Singapore court on Wednesday after pleading guilty to harassing and threatening a 27-year-old Filipina between April and December 2016.
The defendant came to Singapore from Bangladesh 10 years ago and was a manager in the shipping industry at the time of the offenses, while the Filipina was a maid, Shin Min Daily News reported.
The court learned that the pair met each other in 2014 via Facebook, and started a relationship in the next year. While they were romantically involved the Filipina voluntarily sent photos and videos, including shots of herself naked, to the defendant for his private viewing, while the man treated her to dinners and gave her S$300 in cash as gifts.
However, by April 2016, the Filipina rejected his proposal to marry and the pair broke up. The man reportedly felt he had been cheated.
From April to December 2016 the Bangladeshi man allegedly kept texting her to pay him back S$2,000, the sum he estimated he had spent on dating her. However, the victim only returned him the mobile-phone he gave her.
The man became furious and threatened her by creating two fake accounts on Facebook with the victim’s name and attached nude photos.
The victim was notified by friends, who discovered her private photos on social media.
The judge slammed the man for his malicious act, which he said deeply violated her trust and was blackmail. So, he sentenced him to eight months in jail.
