Playgrounds might be taken for granted in more developed countries, but for children in certain parts of the world they are the stuff of dreams.
If such was their dream, kids in a slum area of San Pablo City, in the Philippines’ Laguna province, have just seen it come true, according to Oriental Daily, which reports that a children’s playground – built by a group of Hong Kong student volunteers – opened there this summer.
Mission Until Dawn (MUD) is a university student-initiated project whose mission is to build safe, enjoyable playgrounds for children in developing countries.
Jack Chung, the founder of the group said members had visited Sri Lanka, Cambodia and Nepal and found that children living in these countries have inadequate playgrounds. The experience motivated Chung, a physiotherapist, to help build playgrounds, not only to increase children’s happiness but to assist in their sensory and motor development also.
The project in San Pablo City took 12 months to complete from the initial planning stage. The Hong Kong-registered NGO Chinese YMCA donated HK$100,000 (US$12,812) to the project.
