China state media changing tune on Russia’s war

China’s state-controlled media appear to have new marching orders on how to cover the Russia-Ukraine war, a shift that has allowed for critical reporting on Russia’s economic and military setbacks.

The shift in tone comes after US President Joe Biden told his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping in a two-hour phone call on March 18 that there would be “consequences” if China is found to be providing “material support” to Russia’s war effort.

According to Xinhua, the two leaders had an in-depth exchange of views during the call and agreed to make respective efforts for the “proper settlement” of the Ukraine crisis.
