A 61-year-old Canadian businessman remains in serious condition in Queen Elizabeth Hospital after being ambushed and slashed in an armed robbery outside Chungking Mansions in Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon district, on Saturday.
Four men armed with knives stole more than HK$1.4 million (US$179,623) in cash and watches from the businessman, who runs a money exchange shop in Chungking Mansions, as he left his store at 11pm.
The men, two Indians and possibly two Pakistanis, were waiting inside a blue sedan parked near the entrance of Chungking Mansions, Apple Daily reported.
When the businessman and his Filipina wife crossed the road to the iSquare shopping mall at the junction between Nathan Road and Peking Road, the four masked men jumped out of the car and pushed the wife away.
The businessman was then pushed to the ground and slashed six times at his head, back and legs
The attack took under six seconds and the four men fled with the victim’s backpack containing HK$1 million worth of Cartier watches and HK$400,000 in foreign currencies in their getaway car whch was driven by a fifth man. The businessman’s wife was certain two of the attackers were Indians and the two others could have been Pakistani, Sing Tao Daily reported.
On Sunday, a burnt out sedan was found on Lung Yue Road in Tsing Lung Tau of Tsuen Wan. Officers found three burned butcher’s knives and a metal can in the vehicle. Preliminary police investigation suggested both cases were linked.
