Asia Unhedged thinks it’s found the perfect banker to negotiate Greece’s debt woes.
All Europe’ s aghast today at the public revelation that Conchita van der Waal, a Dutch central banker, was fired after being exposed as a dominatrix prostitute who described herself as a “high class nymphomaniac” and earned 10,000 euro a week dressing up as a Nazi and whipping men.
Local tabloids and public opinion shouldn’t be so hasty in hustling a banker with such obvious talents out the door. Greece clearly thinks it’s being whipped by its European and IMF creditors over issues like pension and labor reform as the clock ticks and Athens faces the prospect of running out of cash in a matter of weeks. Administering such a lash requires a certain bit of artistry. In extreme situations like this, it also takes a bit of coaching on how to sell yourself to the highest bidder.
And then, of course, there’s the Nazi angle: Greek deputy defense minister Costas Isychos created a sideshow earlier this month by saying that his government had a “historical duty” to seek compensation from Germany for atrocities committed by Nazi forces during World War II. How much? An eye-popping 278.7 billion euros.
Germany’s economic minister Sigmar Gabriel called the request “stupid” and said it was spurred by Greece’s need to force some leverage from its eurozone creditors. Germany has provided the lion’s share of the 240 billion euro bailout that’s kept Greece’s economy afloat since 2010.
All this brings us back to Conchita – who’s clearly looking for work. A more perfect candidate for resolving Greece’s debt crisis couldn’t be found.
